The SLP Way of Life

1. Our personality - SLPs are described as Type A personality. We are typically outgoing, ambitious, super organized, highly status conscious, impatient, anxious, proactive, and concerned with time management. High achieving workaholics! SLPs are also smart, practical, functional, realistic, dynamic communicators, social, multitaskers, well rounded, givers, doers, passionate, enthusiastic, and have great instincts.

2. Our look – You can always spot the SLP in the school building or even in a hotel lobby. We just stand out. Part of it is that our professionalism tends to lend itself to a well-dressed, usually on point for fashion, put together individual. It is a look of confidence that can be seen by others. We know how to communicate and socialize and typically make eye contact and greet people with a smile.

3. Our home life – SLPs are typically parents and/or highly involved aunts/uncles who are constantly assessing, diagnosing, treating, or offering advice for one thing or another. We have busy lifestyles that require us to make lists and keep a schedule. We often pretend to be stressed out by this, but secretly love the chaos. A lot of us are creative and crafty, making materials for work, home décor, and t-shirts. Most SLPs likely drink lots of coffee to keep their energy level high and lots of wine to help keep their stress levels low (or at least lower).

4. Our motivation – This is easy…our clients, patients, and students! We never stop thinking about our clients. The fact that we get to change the lives of the people we work with is truly amazing. We can’t NOT take our work home with us and sometimes even dream about our clients achieving goals.

5. Our work - We have the best job in the world, seriously, we do! We have flexibility, variety, and job security. Our work is rewarding and we make true connections with clients and their families. We have very high expectations for ourselves and our clients. Although this leads to going above and beyond and the feeling that our work is never done, it is totally WORTH IT!

If you do the SLP way of life right, you will be so LUCKY! There is no better job than one that improves other’s lives. We do this every day, while also recognizing the need for a full life ourselves. Our personality makes us not only workaholics but high achievers in all areas. We bring the passion and enthusiasm wherever we go and draw people in. This is why we want to connect with you in this way.
